The Lesidhe - Guardian of the Forests
Every country on earth has wee folk in Slavic lands they are know as Leshes in Russia as Zubotchniks, in Ireland they are the Sidhe (pronounced as Shee) but no matter what their name this distinct race inhabits the world of Middle Earth. Folklore for centuries has recorded their encounters with humans. It is believed that they are fallen angels who were not good enough to be saved, nor bad enough to be lost! Their glamour – a form of the Gaelic word for fairy power is great. They are able to move quickly, change shape, be a breeze that rises on a calm day, a scent of flowers where no flowers grow.

Each element of our earth is directly under the influence of a band of wee folk. The Lesidhe (pronounced Lay-Shee), govern the forests. They are most active at dawn and dusk. Though no Lesidhe has ever harmed a mortal, their pranks are nasty and usually involving trying to lose people in the deep woods! They like to mimic mockingbirds to confuse hikers and travelers and have learned to even make human sounds. Lesidhe inhabit the trees using their magic and rituals to repair the damage done by humans to the environment!

As the keepers of the forest, the Lesidhe are always disguised in the foliage. Unless a Lesidhe gets up and walks about it is hard to distinguish them from the trees they protect. Caution is advised when attempting to approach a Lesidhe. Contacting them is not a wise practice - as they hate to be distracted from their duty to aid the planet and the environment. Proceed with great care as you enter the forest and wait until you sense their movement in the trees. If you see foliage that seems to be moving when all around it is still - you are probably seeing a Lesidhe. Don't speak his name, but be courteous, bid him good day and move on.

Throughout the centuries the Sidhe have always celebrated three great festivals May Eve, Midsummer Eve and November Eve. On these days the wee folk party day and night as no mere mortal can - feasting, fighting and making love. They love to dance and make the most beautiful music - a woman who lived among them for seven years returned to her family and she had no toes- she said she had danced them off! In the months following each festival many more fairies are born so the wee folk must move on to larger homes. Being most generous the Lesidhe happily abandon their forest castles to whoever finds them.

Only after many difficult and often dangerous days walking among the deepest forest have we been so fortunate to find some of the Lesidhe castles. While we can't predict how they will behave, as all wee folk are staunchly independent, if you share your home with them, are kind and respectful, we find the Lesidhe to be welcomed house guests.

No matter how long abandoned, these homes still hold much glamour, so listen for the music and dance with them whenever you have the chance, the Lesidhe love to party!

Chicago native now living in MN. Carving since the early '70's. Inspired by the Irish heritage, the other half is Russian, I carve forest dweller houses for the wee folk! Each one is a unique dwelling fit for the fairies! Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Brian Froud were all inspiration for my carvings! But my grandson started me on this road, when he asked if I could carve a Hobbit house like in "Lord of the Rings" I finished one, and a few day later his neighbor wanted one, the rest is history! I sell my art on Etsy! - Woodcarver49. Thank you for taking the time to look at my work.

Admirable work! In a world filled with news of impending doom it's a relief to see people still have the desire and talent to do whimsical, free hearted work. Wonder is too easily forgotten, and dreaming.
I recall reading a large book on Gnomes as a kid, and have always been a fan of Tolkien, and later Froud. Keep up magic alive! We may need it one day.
